The Search Window displays the results of a search. The file name and details are listed followed by the lines where matches have been found.
To jump between files where matches have been found use the Next and Previous commands. For text files the line numbers can be displayed while for binary files the hexadecimal address is shown.
To view a file containing a match, either select the file name or match of interest with the left mouse button and use the View, Launch or Editor commands. You can also double click directly on the relevant line with the left mouse button where the file will be displayed using either the internal viewer, the associated application or your own editor depending on which option you have selected with the View files with menu command.
• | The View command views the file with the internal viewer. |
• | The Launch command loads the file with its associated application. |
• | The Editor command views the file with the editor of your choice. |
By using the internal viewer, the match selected will be immediately displayed in the viewing window. If your editor supports it, then Examine32/Examine64 Text Search will let you direct your editor to the exact position of the match selected. If a file name is selected rather than a line containing a particular match, then the file will be displayed at its beginning.
If you wish to change the way your search results are sorted you can select your new sorting criteria from the search window toolbar. This only changes the sorting of the selected search. If your sorting criteria are different from that in the original search, you can save your new criteria for use in future searches using the search window toolbar. If you wish to change the sorting of all search windows use the Sort all by command.
You can save your search results to a file in a variety of formats including the program’s own format which lets you view your search at a later date. To save your search results go to Save As.
The matches are highlighted by default as bold blue text but this can be changed by the Colours command. If you always want the results of a search shown initially in a maximized window select the Always maximize command.
When a search window is active the status bar will indicate the total number of matches.
To copy text and/or files from the search window to the clipboard, text is selected using the mouse. The selected text and/or files can then be copied to the clipboard using the Copy command. By default the Copy command only copies text and not files but this action can be changed using the Copy as Dialog Box
